On Thursday, July 6, 1916, at 7pm, a fire broke out in the second story of the Ashcroft Hotel. The fire destroyed 5 blocks on Railway Avenue; taking out most of the business section, 3 hotels, and all of Chinatown. To this day, the cause of the fire is unknown.
